Lo que cuento antes que nada es mi intimidad. Entonces es una mirada hacia las cosas que sean libres. No hay intencionalidad ni un mensaje específico, aunque hayan proyectos en mi vida que sean, por ejemplo, políticos. También, lo que me es importante es restituir el detalle. Pero no me gusta llevar una narrativa específica, hasta mis fotografías más políticas son las que hablan desde la intimidad.
La fotografía es mi mirada, la cotidianidad que tengo para acercarme a las cosas. Es mi manera de denunciar la rapidez en su totalidad, de ignorar alguna parte de la realidad.
First and foremost, I convey my intimacy. So it’s a perspective on things that are free. There is no intentionality or specific message, although there are projects in my life that are, for example, political. Also, what is important to me is to restore detail. But I don’t like to carry a specific narrative; even my most political photographs speak from intimacy.
Photography is my perspective, the everyday way I have to approach things. It is my way of denouncing the rush in its entirety, of ignoring some part of reality.
Lo primero que yo asocio con la juventud es primero en comprensión. He notado que los sujetos que yo más adoro son niñes. Hay un montón de fotos de niñes y de viejas también, entonces es muy divertido por que son dos estados resurgiendo. Entonces pensé la juventud e intenté hacer una mezcla de lo que representa para mi ese movimiento. Me alucina pensar en la idea de la libertad como animal simbólico. Igualmente, al retratar niñes, en esa libertad también encuentro incomprensión.
También creo que hay espacios que me resuenan a la juventud, como por ejemplo Sicilia, aun que lo relaciono con un proceso más de conflicto.
Entonces, al representar la juventud, también la composición fue una manera de expresar fotografías que hablan de diferentes fases. No como si fuese un concepto pero también como una mucho más íntima que va cambiando a medida que pasa el tiempo.
How does the symbology of your photography represent youth?
The first thing I associate with youth is primarily understanding. I've noticed that the subjects I adore the most are children. There are a lot of photos of children and also old women, which is very amusing because they represent two resurging states. So, I thought about youth and tried to create a mix of what that movement represents to me. I'm fascinated by the idea of freedom as a symbolic animal. Similarly, when portraying children, in that freedom I also find incomprehension. I also believe there are places that resonate with youth for me, like Sicily, although I associate it more with a process of conflict.
Thus, in representing youth, the composition was also a way to express photographs that speak of different phases. Not as if it were a concept, but also as something much more intimate that changes over time.
Hay algo en la fotografía de la relación entre tu ser y el ser artista. Hay algo de vulnerabilidad, pero no en el sentido de la retórica que implica una necesidad de plasmar un trauma o necesitar ser vulnerable para contar algo. Depende de dónde se coloca el mapa en el momento. Sé que una parte de mi es profundamente vulnerable, pero sinceramente mi mirada en la fotografía se sensibiliza frente a los sujetos que se relacionan conmigo.
La posición de la persona que fotografía casi nunca es tan vulnerable como la que está siendo retratada.
No me apetece mostrar la emoción o pretender que puedo mostrarla.
There is something in photography about the relationship between your being and being an artist. There is an element of vulnerability, but not in the sense of the rhetoric that implies a need to portray trauma or needing to be vulnerable to tell something. It depends on where the focus is placed at the moment. I know that a part of me is deeply vulnerable, but honestly, my perspective in photography becomes sensitive to the subjects that relate to me. The position of the person taking the photograph is almost never as vulnerable as the one being portrayed. I do not feel inclined to show emotion or pretend that I can show it.
Creo que si bien la globalización tiene sus cosas negativas, también estamos conectados de una manera loquísima. Todo lo que es el espacio digital es algo para mí, generativo. Sobre todo a nivel artístico en todo lo que respecta a la comunidad, es muy importante.
Sin embargo, en algunos lugares hay un elitísmo y una ignorancia académica institucionalizada por el lado del arte, más el italiano. Por eso a veces son difíciles los accesos. Para mí, crear comunidad es ser abierta, poder crear un espacio sin jerarquías y que se empiecen a valorar las diferencias dentro de los mismos contextos. Poder crear un proceso horizontal compartido en el que se pueda converger.
I believe that although globalization has its negative aspects, we are also connected in an incredible way. The digital space, for me, is something generative. Especially at an artistic level, in everything related to the community, it is very important.
However, in some places, there is elitism and institutionalized academic ignorance in the realm of art, particularly in Italy. That's why access can sometimes be difficult. For me, creating a community means being open, being able to create a space without hierarchies, and starting to value differences within the same contexts. It means being able to create a shared horizontal process where convergence is possible.
