07. Mustafa Sarp Danisoglu

A youth that resists the conditions of the world.
People who are punk on the outside but have love on the inside.

Turkish artist living in Bologna, Italia

INTERVIEW

Why is youth important in your artistic vision?

I am 24 years old, and I also feel young. I live in a city like Bologna, where there are lots of young people. We have fun, we participate in protests for our rights... I still see life from the perspective of youth.

What questions arise when portraying youth?

It depends on where I am. We are always changing, and the perspective changes too. When I am at a protest, I see people fighting for their rights. Or, when I am in the park, I see something else. Youth is always shifting.

In your composition, you talk about Punk, Rebellion, and Love. How do these points connect?

Good question. Every week in Bologna, we go out into the streets to fight for our rights and other causes... and there’s always a rebellion of ideas. Punk is also a culture of resistance, of rebellion. I included love as well... the concept of youth contains a bit of all of these elements.

Is there a particular person who inspires your work?

I come from a family of painters. My uncle is also a photographer. I grew up in an artistic environment and I’ve always wanted to be a filmmaker. And I believe that anyone who wants to be a director should also know a little about photography.

What do you think about the situation for emerging artists in Italy today, in 2024?

It’s tough. If you do something artistic, it’s always hard to live off it alone. But that’s why we need to support each other. Young people must raise their voices and stand up to the system. Everyone thinks there’s only one path to follow... but there are thousands of ways to create art. Even the small things we do—photography, music—are art. But unfortunately, the system controls everything, and it’s hard to show our art.

Do you think there is a need for more artistic freedom in Italy right now?

Yes, of course. It has always been necessary, but now more than ever.

How do you want your art to be represented? How would you like the audience to perceive it?

I want them to see exactly what happened at the moment I took the photograph.

How do you think we can create a culture of greater democratization of art and make it more accessible to everyone?

We always talk about youth. Our focus is young people. We need to unite our projects and create a new culture. For example, how I found you. I’m a Turkish person in Bologna who discovered this project in Buenos Aires. We must always seek something international.
