A photographic project with Juliana Novello
How did you start in photography?
Since I was a teenager, I was always intrigued by the world of photography. I remember buying a camera on a trip to get started. It didn’t go well because it stopped working, and I ended up giving up.
But during the pandemic, I reconnected with it. I started getting into the analog world, and one day, almost miraculously, I found a compact analog camera in my house. I bought a roll of film and started taking pictures. I took photography courses, one more theoretical and others that helped me exercise creativity and motivation.
What do you find in your photography? What do you seek to convey with your composition?
The truth is that my main goal as a photographer (and as an artist) is to convey a sensation or emotion to the viewer. My vision of art, and of life, is like that. I hate things that are empty, without emotion. That's why I often don't care as much about technique in photography, whether a photo is properly exposed or in focus. I think it's important, yes, but I prefer to take away something from the photo beyond it just looking nice. That's what I seek with my photography and what I still feel I have a lot to achieve. I am a very self-demanding person and I always want more.
With my partner and friend Juli (@shulinovello), we had said that we wanted to do a photo session together. We started looking for references. I came to the conclusion that I wanted something somewhat angelic. I was a bit inspired by the song "Meta Angel" by FKA Twigs. Then, Juli somehow perfected what would be a sort of script. We came up with the idea that these people, these angels, would fall to Earth, disoriented, and find a sort of "habitat" where they would stay. Juli had the excellent idea that they would exchange objects with different people using a huge amount of coins. Based on that idea, the angels would roam the city until they reached their place, where they would find all these purchased and exchanged objects, with which they would play.
In what way do you navigate youth within your artistic vision? Is there an object or symbol that you associate with youth?
Being in a constant search for what I want to be and what I want to create, being full of doubts, fears, and hopes, I try to pour all of that into what I want my artistic vision to be. I would like to be able to answer, and have some of these mentioned questions answered, through my projects. At the same time, what interests me most is portraying today's youth. Those "lost" souls who want and seek to find themselves.
How would you like the public to view your work?
My biggest fear is that the photographs I take will feel empty. Therefore, what I seek most, as I mentioned before, is to convey something to my audience. I don’t want it to be just a pretty picture. I want it to touch a memory or an emotion, whether already felt or not.
